PCA supports the people of Ukraine

As a gesture of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, the PCA Board has allowed us to donate 15% of the value of our training and examination bookings taken next week, to a charity that works to support the children of victims of the invasion of Ukraine. So for anyone considering booking a training course with us, perhaps think about booking it next week? We will let you know how much we donate and exactly where the money went the week after next.

Why become a Board member?

With the PCA pushing out Board nomination requests in the not too distant future, what exactly is involved when it comes to being a member of the PCA Board? 'A strong, skilled, and diverse board is vital to the functioning and future growth of the Association' according to former chairman Hudson Lambert. This sums it up perfectly and will ensure that members' interests continue to be served across all sectors of membership. So could that be you? Could you be our next Board member when it comes to the election process at the AGM later this year? To find out more about what's involved, read what else Hudson had to say via the button below...

The Building Envelope Research Network

The PCA was delighted to accept an offer of a seat on the advisory Board of a new cross-faculty research network - The Building Envelope Research Network (BERN) - established to coordinate and promote interdisciplinary research into all aspects of building envelopes. For our members, this is an important moment and one which recognises the PCA as part of the conversation. The initiative driven by University College London (UCL) aims to link industry, legislators, researchers and academics from the UK and around the world, to create a truly cross sector, international group that can tap into the knowledge, experience and resources that are so often held in silos. The provision of safe sustainable buildings is surely at the heart of any society. We are delighted that the PCA has been recognised and has been able to accept a central role in work that aims to create better places for us all to live and work. The advisory Board met for the first time last week to discuss its role and purpose. The small group of 12 people also heard a presentation setting out the sorts of projects that need investigation. At this initial meeting PCA had the guest presentation that featured our work on PU foam insulation in roofs. For more information on the function of UCL BERN, click on the button below.

The role of a Retrofit Coordinator

PCA members are almost certainly bored to death with our pontifications about retrofit and how (unless it is done properly) its adoption affects a buildings ability to manage water. We have become increasingly disquiet about the quality of retrofit work we have seen and the consequences of defects when they occur. This has turned into frustration as we have attempted to influence those who make policy, deliver training and implement standards. This grows as we hear about more initiatives that puts volume over quality. Banging our head against this metaphorical wall is boring but we cannot overstate the importance of the issue retrofit is aimed at resolving. In a change in tack I have now enrolled on the Level 5 Retrofit Coordinators course. Over the next few months expect more from us about the challenges of retrofit. We may also be able to send out more of a balanced view of the issue of delivery as we better understand the commercial opportunities and the technical challenges that the UK's commitment to reaching “carbon net zero” is going to throw our way....

Futurebuild Conference

Earlier this week CEO Steve Hodgson and Technical Manager James Berry attended the Futurebuild Conference at the ExCel in London. The event is a platform for pioneering construction ideas, particularly net zero and connects over 20,000 specifiers, decision-makers and disruptors with major brands and start-ups. As well as the usual networking opportunities, the event provided an opportunity to horizon gaze at some of the future construction technologies, as well as the construction issues that are likely to materialise.
