For those in the invasive weed sector, how often are plants such as bamboo present when carrying out surveys? We may be more familiar with Japanese Knotweed and the damage it can do to the built environment, but when it comes to Bamboos and other Invasive Weed grasses, should we be better informed and prepared to tackle the problems they can cause too? What did I think to the course?
This course proved to be well worth attending, as I suspected it would be, due to the prevalence of bamboo and I found myself directly benefiting from this course within days of having finished it. I was asked to carry out a Japanese Knotweed survey, to support the purchase of a property and, although there was no Japanese Knotweed, there was a significant amount of bamboo, which I felt able to comment and advise on, thanks directly to this course. The course is well designed and follows a logical progression. Jim Glaister, the presenter, delivers the course with a very relaxed and open style and ensures that everyone feels able to ask questions, or clarify points without feeling embarrassed about it.
Do I feel more informed about Bamboo now?
I genuinely feel I am a more complete surveyor for having done the course and would strongly recommend it to all those who currently carry out Japanese Knotweed surveys, as we all know just how often we encounter bamboo within these surveys, I feel it is going to be increasingly important and valuable to our business to be able to add bamboo to our service offering.

The PCA's ongoing drive for best practice
Ongoing professional development is a key remit of the Property Care Association to drive forward best practice in the specialised invasive weed industry. Working with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) - supported by the Council of Mortgage Lenders and The Building Societies Association - the Property Care Association set up the Invasive Weed Control Group in back in 2012 which is still going strong today. Over the years, the group has provided guidance and expertise to all who manage invasive weeds offering high levels of technical knowledge and practical skill.
