A review of the Invasive Weed Conference

The 2022 International Invasive Weed conference took place last Thursday, and as we said some weeks ago, this event would be "the best days work you'll do this year". So for those members who joined us, did it deliver on this promise?

PCA's Technical Manager's Peter Fitzsimons and Daniel Docking give a review of the event in a joint blog, which you can access via the button below...

Damp & Mould still hitting the headlines

The media coverage on damp and mould issues continues to remain in the headlines, including a report from ITV news last week featuring the Property Care Association.

The PCA has been invited to comment across several platforms on these issues, which presents opportunities to promote our members, as the 'go to specialists' for expert advice on damp diagnostics. The importance of education and legislation is at the forefront of our minds and we continue to share knowledge and best practice.

For now, you can view the ITV news report via the button below.

Article for Journal of Building, Survey, Appraisal & Valuation

PCA's waterproofing members may recall completing a short questionnaire a few months ago, to assist PCA member James Hockey with his article: 'Procuring basement waterproofing in 2022' for the highly regarded Journal of Building Survey, Appraisal & Valuation.

The article focused on the current mindset of those that design waterproofing in below ground structures, with the aim of dissecting the various market offerings and explaining the implications of each. In addition, along with all those who contributed to the research, you can take a more in depth look at the responses across a variety of areas.

What all manufacturers & users need to know in 2023

For those who may not be aware, the British Boad of Agrement (BBA) is holding a webinar next Thursday, 8th December. The focus is to enable manufacturers, installers and certificate users (architects, building surveyors etc) to answer supplier questions around UK Conformity Assessment (UKCA) and product marking, such as:

  • Where are we today and what happens after the transition?
  • What will we see in terms of product marking over the next few years?
  • Aspects of UKCA that you may not be able to proceed with yet

RICS Guidance on Knotweed gets a new name

We bring you news that the new RICS Guidance Note launched in March this year “Japanese knotweed and residential property” is now called an RICS Professional Standard.

There are no changes to the text, but we would urge invasive weed surveyors to check that you are using the correct document which you can download via the button below.

RICS say this change is solely to allow a simplification of its Guidance Notes & Statements which are now both called ‘Professional Standards’, and helps them clarify their own communications with RICS members. Professional Standards are “the documents which set requirements for competent and ethical practice”. Even though not aimed at CSJK-qualified invasive weed surveyors, the status of this document and its likely legal importance should not be underestimated by those involved in Japanese knotweed surveying and management.

Press Coverage & Maintenance Week

Our 'top tips for property maintenance' was picked up by a number of publications during Maintenance Week. Whilst these articles focused attention on reminding homeowners of the tasks they can undertake, they also help in highlighting the importance of sharing good knowledge and the specialist skills that PCA members hold.

As we said last week, the Property Care Association will continue to share advice and guidance whilst striving for better education and tighter regulation for all buildings.

Applications & Membership

We welcome the following Independent Surveyor into the Property Care Association:
